Summary

The epic, can’t-miss follow-up to the New York Times bestselling Avatar, The Last Airbender:The Rise of Kyoshi

Kyoshi’s place as the true Avatar has finally been cemented—but at a heavy cost。 With her mentors gone, Kyoshi voyages across the Four Nations, struggling to keep the peace。 But while her reputation grows, a mysterious threat emerges from the Spirit World。 To stop it, Kyoshi, Rangi, and their reluctant allies must join forces before the Four Nations are destroyed irreparably。 This thrilling follow-up continues Kyoshi’s journey from a girl of humble origins to the merciless pursuer of justice still feared and admired centuries after becoming the Avatar。

I really enjoyed the continuation of Kyoshi's journey as the Avatar more than the previous book。 Besides another slow start, the rest of the book felt fairly well balanced and the story was great! I love the Avatar universe! I love the fully formed characters it creates and the compelling political and spiritual crises the avatar has to deal with。 This book started slower than the first Kyushu book, but by the end I was hooked! The villain was one of the best in the series and it was so compelling to see them battle。

This book was a strong followup to The Rise of Kyoshi。 Along her journey, I felt her pain, her joy and her growth。 You can absolutely tell how she became the avatar we all know and love in ATLA and LoK。 I have all the nostalgic feelings and I'm forever greatful these novels exist。 This book was a strong followup to The Rise of Kyoshi。 Along her journey, I felt her pain, her joy and her growth。 You can absolutely tell how she became the avatar we all know and love in ATLA and LoK。 I have all the nostalgic feelings and I'm forever greatful these novels exist。 。。。more

I have to admit it took me a while to warm up to the second book after the ending of the first book。 The action took a while to start and move the plot along but as soon at it did the pace of the story just flooded smoothly。 I loved the development that Kyoshi went through towards her friends and Yun and the harsh decisions she had to make within the book。 I also liked that Kyoshi and Rangi's relationship was there but subtle as their romance was not the main focus of the book, rather it was the I have to admit it took me a while to warm up to the second book after the ending of the first book。 The action took a while to start and move the plot along but as soon at it did the pace of the story just flooded smoothly。 I loved the development that Kyoshi went through towards her friends and Yun and the harsh decisions she had to make within the book。 I also liked that Kyoshi and Rangi's relationship was there but subtle as their romance was not the main focus of the book, rather it was the built up to Kyoshi's acceptence at being the Avatar。 The continued world-building of the Avatar universe was fun to read outside of watching it in a series and it did take some while to get used to。 But I liked how the author managed to expand on the avatar universe and link Kyoshi and Kuruk's story so easily even with Kyoshi being the main focus。 。。。more

Well written, exciting and well paced。 It was an easy read they kept me consuming page after page。 I would love to see more Kyoshi books from Yee; and am incentivized to read his other YA collection now。

"You don't deserve to hurt more people because of what you suffered, Yun。"Two books chronicling pivotal points of Avatar Kyoshi's life。 You gotta be sold from that already! And of course, there's Rangshi to ship ♡The series' tone/mood feels closer to TLOK than TLOA for a bit of dark/violent themes。 We see more killing in this one (because。。。Kyoshi lol)。 The other Avatar shows always put an emphasis against violence, but Kyoshi goes the other way。 I like the different narrative。 "You don't deserve to hurt more people because of what you suffered, Yun。"Two books chronicling pivotal points of Avatar Kyoshi's life。 You gotta be sold from that already! This book and the previous one open the world of Avatar and make the universe more expansive。 Kyoshi is made out to be a big bad wolf in the Last Air Bender, however, this series adds humility to the character, showing her struggles and challenges she faced in her early years as the Avatar

If the first book benefited from expectations exceeded, this one suffered from expectations unmet。 I was hoping this book would focus on the spirit-world side of Kyoshi's Avatar-ness, and to some extent it did, but it was a pretty paltry spirit world, with only one actual spirit。 The surprise return of Yun offered more opportunity to explore that world, but was also treated fairly perfunctorily。In general, the stuff I was hoping the book would spend time on get relatively short shrift -- the spi If the first book benefited from expectations exceeded, this one suffered from expectations unmet。 I was hoping this book would focus on the spirit-world side of Kyoshi's Avatar-ness, and to some extent it did, but it was a pretty paltry spirit world, with only one actual spirit。 The surprise return of Yun offered more opportunity to explore that world, but was also treated fairly perfunctorily。In general, the stuff I was hoping the book would spend time on get relatively short shrift -- the spirit world, Kyoshi's relationships with her friends and the rest of the world -- while we got a lot of Kyoshi's internal struggles to figure out what's right。 Which is fine, but I didn't learn anything new there I hadn't gotten from the first book。 I did enjoy learning more about the milieu of the Fire Kingdom in the years before they took over the world。The best part of the book was the backstories of the two previous Avatars, which really drove home that the position is one taken by ordinary people struggling to do their best, and not always making a good job of it。 Kuruk's desparate, but deeply unhealthy, way of handling a stressful job resonate beyond this fictional world。 I would have loved a book that was more of that。 。。。more

It was pretty good because anything Avatar related is pretty good it just felt like it was missing something。 It didn’t have the same feel as the first book but it was still enjoyable and Kyoshi is my favorite Avatar。 I really hope there’s a third book that goes into detail about Kyoshi Island。

Equally fun, more politically charged, Sequel! The character of Kyoshi struggles still with her being the Avatar and the political scenery of the nations。It had character growth, an exciting story and overall well written plot!

I had a great time reading this book--however, I do think that this book fell slightly flat in comparison to The Rise of Kyoshi, but only because the first book was that thrilling! I wish there were more books in this series because there's still so much room for Kyoshi's arc to expand, especially since this duology only tells the story of Kyoshi's early avatarhood。 I would've loved to see more of her growth as an avatar。 Aside from that, I also wish that the side characters (Yun, The Flying Ope I had a great time reading this book--however, I do think that this book fell slightly flat in comparison to The Rise of Kyoshi, but only because the first book was that thrilling! The Kyoshi novels will forever have a special place in my heart。 The writing is amazing and encapsulating, and I loved it so much。 This book singlehandedly got me out of a reading slump。

Kathrin

I was not a huge fan of this novel because it seemed that for the whole nearly 350 pages the action was repeated and it just did not feel like Avatar to me。 I really enjoyed the LGBTQ+ representation but that was the most the book had going for it。

Sarah

I really like the writing style and the depth to the plot。 It did bother me that the story just felt like one defeat/misery after another。 On one hand, that does make sense given that it's conveying the stuggles Kyoshi is going through, but I feel like the first book still had enough happy/light-hearted moments to balance it out。 This book really could have used more of those。 I really like the writing style and the depth to the plot。 It did bother me that the story just felt like one defeat/misery after another。 On one hand, that does make sense given that it's conveying the stuggles Kyoshi is going through, but I feel like the first book still had enough happy/light-hearted moments to balance it out。 This book really could have used more of those。 。。。more

“You live on top of what I control。 Your islands are surrounded by MY waves。 You fill your very lungs at MY discretion。 So if I hear any news about ‘Yun’ being executed, you will truly learn what it’s like when the spirits forsake you in the face of the elements。”AVATAR KYOSHI BEST AVATAR

This book had a two way route and either way was fine with me。Either Kyoshi would break Yun out of his trance(which never really was a trance)and they get together or Kyoshi would stay with Rangi。Overall it was a pretty exciting read。

More avatar, more for me to love

I loved this sequel even more than I loved the first book。 This was an excellent sequel, and it made me appreciate the past Avatars so much more。 The reference to Aang on page 344 should NOT have destroyed me as much as it did。 Overall, this was a fantastic sequel to a great duology :))

3。5, rounded up to 4。 I'm gonna need to read these books again at another time, because my mind was just somewhere else while I was reading this, and I wasn't fully focused on it。 But I know I did appreciate the writing, I loved Kyoshi as a character and her found family with Rangi and their friends, and I love the established lore of the world of Avatar。 As for the actual story, that's what I need to read it again for so I can give it the proper focus it deserves。 As it stands I felt like I was 3。5, rounded up to 4。 I'm gonna need to read these books again at another time, because my mind was just somewhere else while I was reading this, and I wasn't fully focused on it。 But I know I did appreciate the writing, I loved Kyoshi as a character and her found family with Rangi and their friends, and I love the established lore of the world of Avatar。 As for the actual story, that's what I need to read it again for so I can give it the proper focus it deserves。 As it stands I felt like I was expecting a little bit more from this book, and I feel like I wanted a little more overall from the series, but my mind is still a little distracted, so I can't find the words to accurately describe my feelings。 This was great, though, in the sense that it's a fantastic deeper look into the world for any huge fans of the Avatar: The Last Airbender show。 。。。more
